❣️ Thinx period underwear: my review after 3 years of use

Hi friends, welcome back! In today's post, I wanted to provide a review of the Thinx period underwear. I've been using these products for 3 years now, but only started to use them more regularly since I've gotten my period back (which you can read about here).

I have three pairs:

  • 2 Super Hiphugger in black

  • 1 Sport in black

There's so many more styles now on the website, but Thinx was quite new in 2018 so I just went with their most popular ones.

Why period underwear?

I only used to wear the overnight heavy flow pads because I didn't want any leaks or shenanigans happening but this led me to feel like I was always wearing a diaper. Even with those Always Infinity or Always Air - I must say that overnight pads have become MUCH thinner, but still. I wasn't into tampons or menstrual cups so period underwear really seemed like the only other choice.

Also, the environment. Pads take 500-800 years to decompose...I didn't want to leave this world and still have my blood sitting somewhere in a landfill (LOL it sounds weird when I put it like that). Basically, I knew that pads weren't good for the environment and I was trying to do my part.

Cost

Pads are expensive and a constant recurring expense whereas period underwear require a one time cost. If these last even 5-10 years, you would have saved so much money. The initial cost is quite steep, especially if you want to buy a bunch of pairs, but I really wanted to reduce my environmental impact which is why the cost was fine for me.

Initial thoughts

When I first got them, I was shocked at how normal they seemed - I guess I was expecting some granny underwear or diaper situation but they were very compact and I was quite skeptical of if they would really be able to hold 5 tampons worth of blood (as the website claims). Nonetheless, I was really excited to use them for my next period!

How I use them

I use my Thinx just like how I wear normal underwear - I change the pair everyday. Since I have 3 pairs and my period usually lasts for 5 days, I hand wash them and rewear. I don't have to worry about leaks at all, no matter if I'm exercising, sitting at my desk and sleeping.

Sleeping used to be my biggest worry with pads and when most of my leaks would happen. But with Thinx, since the panties are really snug, I haven't experienced any leaks which makes it so much easier to sleep when I'm on my period.

Even if you have enough pairs to get you through your period without hand-washing and re-wearing, I would recommend rinsing them out before you put them for a wash - especially with your other clothes since I'm not sure if the blood would stain/dye your clothes.

Now that we're at home with COVID/lockdown, I think it's a perfect time to try them if you're worried about how much they can really hold. Another concern I had was if I would be able to feel the wetness/moisture of the blood and the answer to that is also no. Obviously when you're bleeding, you will be able to feel that initial wetness, but it quickly absorbs into the underwear, and you're left feeling dry again.

And honestly, I'm willing to feel a little bit of discomfort because I know that using a more sustainable option like Thinx is so much better for the environment.

If you have any other questions, be sure to comment them down below or get in touch with me 🙂 I would love to know what your thoughts are on sustainable period products and if you personally use any!

Sending you lots of love and light,

-Reina xo
