Unfu*k Yourself by Gary John Bishop 📚 (book review)

Hi friends, welcome back! In this post, I'll be taking you through a brief summary as well as sharing my key insights on Unfu*k Yourself by Gary John Bishop.

This was definitely a kick in backside type of book and super inspirational and motivational to get your life together.

Here are some points that really stuck out:

1. Even if you can't control the situation, you can control the way you deal with it (like most things in life, our response is so much more important than the actual situation)

An example that Bishop gives in the book is that if you suffer the loss of a loved one, that's super tragic and it's totally valid to grieve and take your time. However, if down the road, your life is being hindered by the fact that you're feeling so sorry for yourself, then that's the response you've chosen. I do understand that everyone's grieving patterns and timeframes are different, but let's take another example.

I'm sure we've all seen those motivational speakers who've suffered a horrible injury, and instead of letting that injury define the rest of their life - they rise above it and turn it something much more. It's often said that people who have suffered a life debilitating injury are just as happy, if not happier than normal people, and why is that? Because they've changed their outlook and their response to the situation.

2. Stop pointing to outside forces and playing the blame game (i.e. I don't have time to look for another job, I don't have time to workout/eat better)

It's so easy for us to fall into the trap of blaming others or outside circumstances. Instead of switching jobs, we stay miserable in our current jobs because we're too busy to look.

Say you're unhappy with your weight and every new year, you've told yourself, "This is the year I lose the weight", but every year you don't change any of your habits or systems, so the passes by and you're left feeling sorry for yourself.

You might say you don't have time to cook healthy meals or workout when you've been binging Netflix or scrolling endlessly on you phones. The truth is, if we want to make a change, the first step is to be willing, which transitions into the fourth key.

3. Try saying "I am unwilling to put my health first" or "My health is not a priority" or whatever you're trying to improve in your life —> how does that make you feel?

When we phrase things like this, it puts it into perspective - if we are truly willing, then that's already one step in the right direction.

4. Most of the things in life that we think are difficult, aren't.

We just hype them up in our head and psych ourselves out for no reason. This happens to me so often, before starting a task at work, I think to myself "Oh my god, this is going to be SO intense and I'm going to have no idea how to even start" but try thinking things are going to be easier instead and see how it goes.

Concluding thoughts

⚡ On the other side of our challenges lie our dreams ⚡ This is so true, think about living life to your true potential...sounds amazing right? But unless we're willing to put in that work, it'll just remain a dream

This book really pushed me to finally do the things I was dwelling on but never acted upon like starting this little book review series, and to stop making excuses of not finding the time.

I'll definitely need to reread this when I'm going through my sloth phases 🙌

Sending you love, light, and lots of strength to get up and conquer your life,
